African Drums, Daxophones, and that familiar, lingering FUNK.

Ooooooh man. Something’s melting through the ice this winter…

If I wasn’t broadcasting this from a 56k connection I found tangled in my basement in the depths of a sudden ethernet blackout, I would be blowing all your minds with the line-up for January… but that must wait for a time of greater internet dexterity (I have taken the time to link to you to where the music can be found online, though, so take notice!). For now, the two shows of IMMINENT IMPORTANCE, as they will be the last of 2006, are as follows:

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22nd
8:00 PM

-DANDELION FICTION-

“The daxophone is a musical instrument of the idiophone category. It somewhat resembles a wooden ruler, carved in very elaborate shapes, with one end hanging over the edge of a table. It is normally played by bowing the free end, but it can also be struck or plucked. The sound is amplified with a contact microphone. A wide range of voice-like timbres can be produced, depending on the shape of the instrument, the type of wood, where it is bowed, and where along its length it is stopped with a separate block of wood (fretted on one side) called the ‘dax.’” [Check out the creator’s site here.]

Daniel Fishkin will be coming in from Philly for one night to show us how this ridiculous instrument is used. He requests audience members to be prepared to offer their mouths as resonating chambers, and will be selling rubberband instruments to cover the gas…

-MISHPAKA DRUMMERS-

A whole troupe of African drums are gracing the Bubby’s Lounge after Mr. Fishkin, and will be raising eyebrows and pulse rates for a blazing 40 minute set. A integral part of the elite subway performers of our fair city’s infrastructure, they’re taking the ride out Brooklyn to beat the shit out of their skins for all of you.

-MAJESTIC K. FUNK-

Bass amps in their luggage and backs bent with soul, Majestic K. Funk is back at Bubby’s for the last time this year, headlining the night with kind of funky lounge set people love to see. This will be the last of a series of shows they’ve been doing up in the lounge, so catch the funk while it’s still here!

Max Kagan will also be jumping out from behind the bar to open this Thursday up. He’ll be beating his face, hair, and guitar to pieces as the people filter in, and our very own Alexsey (yes… THAT Alexsey!) will be hosting the whole night thru. Let loose this Thursday and come check it out!

(For the sake of our travelling musicians, we’re charging $3 this week for their hard work’s sake. Support local music!)

The next show will certainly get their own email, but to keep your appetites whet, the last show of the year is none other than MUGWUMP(ish)!!! Neil and Marlon may be M.I.A., but that doesn’t stop the party…

We dream of un-confiscated forties, shit-cheap liquor off a plywood bar, smoking inside, bands in the backyard, in the basement, in the bathtub. Out of necessity, we do shows at venues that are pretty lenient by New York standards, but in a perfect world every show would happen at home (in this city of eternal roommates). To get to the nitty-gritty, if you have a space, and think music forcefully shoved inside might work for us both, drop us an email. We can use all shapes and sizes, from pretty little alleyways or back porches for an acoustic kind of good time, or an industrial-looking basement for around 100 kids to spazz the fuck out in…
