The Mercantillers @ Bubby’s Lounge [and January upcoming]
Whoa… deja-vu. After a successful show last week, the Mercantillers are back at Bubby’s Lounge for another round of pirate-themed bluegrass… As always, musicians with websites or MySpaces are linked in this email, so if you see something that sounds cool, take a listen and then come by and check them out live… (and download the attached Quicktime file, to preview the Mercantillers in action!)
* THE MERCANTILLERS!!!
Thursday, Jan 19th
Music starts @ 9pm
$5
“The band’s slogan says it all: ‘Salty Songs Sung by Sultry Seamen.’ Actually,it doesn’t say everything because this boisterous septet also throws in some land-bound bluegrass and original folk-rock, and plenty of humor that Monty Python would approve of. Hoist a glass with this crew and you’ll surely come away with a grin.”
- New York Times
They’ve come a long way since that review… the slogan has been expanded (”Salty Seamen Sing Sensual Sea-Shanties”), and they speak for themselves:
“…but, I digress. About THE MERCANTILLERS… we are A SEA SHANTY BAND, really. Our instrumentation is guitars, banjo, violin (fiddle), uke, squeeze-box, voices, bass (elec or upright), and percussion. Though I do not like to cubbyhole us… we lean towards folksy sorta blue-grass, kinda neo-urbanish, post-retro, Americana… flannel shirt.”
- Robert Block
Kick back, grab a beer, and reminisce about those lost passionate nights with that special mermaid, too many years ago.
And that’s just the beginning. Before the first month of the new year is over, there are quite a few things left up our sleeves… All shows begin at 9pm, unless otherwise noted:
* O DISCORDIA
Tuesday, Jan. 24th
$3
Freight train-hopping folk musicians!
“O Discordia is post-folk music with a orchestrated feel to it. We have been writing deep songs about love, liberty and sad endings lately and we have created a sound that conveys that old folk charm mixed with our generations angst and pain. This is the story of all my adventures, the ones I have had, drunk on trains with Tom and the ones I braved alone, burning in the summer sun hitch-hiking across the coast, O Discordia is the story of the dying embers of love and America found in a young mans heart.”
Strangely enough, one of the musicians in this group is a kid named Tom Bennett. I met him last spring in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he was planning him next round of boxcar riding antics. An article was written about that brief encounter, and it can be found online on a small literary website known as Phallacy [no longer in existence].
* Anj.
Thursday, Jan. 26th
$5
“Anj will give breath to the feelings you wish you could speak. The young singer/songwriter/pianist plays her originals with a rawness and introspection that conveys a wisdom far beyond her years. Her unorthodox musical cocktail, containing the gutsy-ness of blues, the lyrical storytelling of folk, and the harmonies and structure of jazz, is reminiscent of songwriters such as Laura Nyro, Carole King and Janis Ian. But in her live concerts, which have been likened to a one-woman-play set to music, her orginality stands its ground.”
Anj (also known as “Andrea Granieri), also has music available on her MySpace.
* HELLGATE HARMONIE present: MOZART QUINQUAGESIMUSDUCENTESIMUSENNIAL!

Feel free to pass any of this info along to anyone who’s wondering where all the good music’s at. As always directions are attached. I can’t make you, but if you haven’t been here before, I strongly recommend you print them out. I don’t want you to get lost under the BQE.

P.S. The email list has expanded greatly, and is sometimes difficult to keep track of. If I’m sending this to more than one of your accounts accidentally, or you don’t know why you’re receiving these emails in the first place, or you just don’t like my tone of voice and wish the train would just stop and someone would let you off, respond to this email and tell me what the problem is. I’ll deal with it as promptly as I can. Thanks for all of your patience. Piece.
