Polite Sleeper (Record Release!) / Ava Luna / The Dreams / The Shirkers @ Micheline’s

Good friends (and San Francisco transplants) Polite Sleeper has finally finished slaving away in the studio and have come out with 200 hand silk-screened, individually numbered copies of their debut EP, put out by their buddies over the pond - Sabotage Records.

Come out to Micheline’s this Friday and celebrate the release of their first album! Backing them up is none other than Cooling Pie Records spotlight band, Ava Luna, and the last time I saw them play, one of the singers flipped a mattress into the audience.

I doubt there’ll be a mattress at Micheline’s handy, but I’m just saying watch out, y’know?

[ POLITE SLEEPER ]
“Polite Sleeper is the folk punk side-project from Jason and Tim of The Yellow Press (formally of SF, currently of NYC/Germany), and that’s pretty much our story. Jason relocated to New York in the winter of 2005, while Tim followed suit later that summer. The duo soon found a piano player in Manhattan lounge vet Michael See, and the three have been banging out a sound ever since. Pretty crazy stuff at times, but the songs are simple — all about missing one thing or another, about the new challenges and new loves. It’s really the self-improvement we’re after, and while we’ve certainly done a lot with music over the years, we’ve never done this, you know? More important, PS is a punk band. We’re 100% DIY, choosing to record in our living rooms and kitchens, exclusively. We keep the traffic noise and dead notes as reminders of that. We stay true by playing in basements and warehouses, even proper clubs where we don’t quite belong, but take the chance and opportunity of meeting like minds anyway. It all sounds incredibly lofty, sure, but we believe it. It’s what we do. It’s why we’re here, and if you get it, you know what we’re talkin about. Keep it up.” - [ PS ]

[ THE SHIRKERS ]
“Four kinda-in-college, sort-of-working, maybe-making-music, New York-born Brooklynites tear shit up and don’t give a damn what you think. In fact, they’re probably not listening. In fact, they don’t even know how to use the internet.” - [ SleepWhenDeadNYC ]

We dream of un-confiscated forties, shit-cheap liquor off a plywood bar, smoking inside, bands in the backyard, in the basement, in the bathtub. Out of necessity, we do shows at venues that are pretty lenient by New York standards, but in a perfect world every show would happen at home (in this city of eternal roommates). To get to the nitty-gritty, if you have a space, and think music forcefully shoved inside might work for us both, drop us an email. We can use all shapes and sizes, from pretty little alleyways or back porches for an acoustic kind of good time, or an industrial-looking basement for around 100 kids to spazz the fuck out in…
