[ GREEN GNOME BENEFIT ] The NY Howl / Mr. Turner Cody / The Beets / Crimer / The Shirkers @ Micheline’s

[ HELLO! ]
The secret last-minute punk kids from Jersey show, with a smattering of San Francisco, on Tuesday was awesome. I don’t normally do the look back thing, but since I didn’t even get a chance to send out an email about it, I’m doing it justice right now. Nodzzz + VCR + The Lungs. It was a sliding scale donation kinda deal, sharpie’d YO!’s on the hands, stale danishes at the door, Desmond Dekker sing-a-longs in the basement kinda deal. Kickin’ back with all your buddies, the core of the core. Friend of mine was there, who’s starting an art ‘zine called The Green Gnome. This weekend we’re having a a little throwdown, to celebrate and raise some printing money, but she can tell you better herself - (take the floor, Tonia) -

Come on down and support the arts! Join us in celebrating the launch of The Green Gnome on Saturday, July 14th at Micheline’s!
As some of you know, The Green Gnome is a new, free literary and arts magazine based in Brooklyn. Our goal is to reach as many demographics and communities in the City as possible, to give people who usually do not have or do not seek access to the arts the opportunity to do so. The Green Gnome is all about uniting communities through the medium of artistic expression, so the more people we have involved, the more successful we will be.
We’re hosting a benefit/launch party extravaganza to fund the printing of our inaugural issue, dedicated to the ever-lasting spirit of Coney Island. $10 gets you in the door to see a medley of work from our featured artists, hear readings from the authors, and rock out to some pretty awesome music from The Beets, Crimer, The New York Howl, The Shirkers, and Mr. Turner Cody.
The first 100 people to come will receive an advanced copy of The Green Gnome! We need to raise $2,500 to go to press, so come drink, celebrate some great work, and invite everyone you know!

[ INFO. ]
The New York Howl formed in the depths of NYC’s downtown underground in August 2005, and already by November were touring the North East Coast supporting the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Their eclectic energetic live shows deliver raw punk energy, soulful uplifting gospel, dirty blues and garage rock. Their debut album, “People Will Come To See Us Ride” was self-released in August of 2006, followed immediately by a tour throughout England, in which they supported Jeff Lewis, and headlined at the Anti-Folk UK Summer Festival. In April 2007 they headed down to Austin Texas where they featured at the South By Southwest music conference, after which they headed off to England again to play a 2-week sold-out tour supporting Jamie T, with 12 shows in 13 days. “They will rock your world!” (Times, London), “These guys can REALLY play”, (New York Press), “Reckless yet driving rock n roll with strong blues underpinnings.” (Time Out NYC), “…the best breakout band at last year’s CMJ music fest…” (TWI.com, NYC), “…an instant classic album - a body blow landed squarely by the raw momentum of a band just discovering itself and realizing its potential for epic greatness.” (The Deli Magazine, NYC)

[ THE BEETS ]
The Beets hail from Queens, New York. They formed after Juan and Jose had an argument about whether Corey Haim copied Corey Feldman or whether Corey Feldman copied Corey Haim. After their friendship ended and they didn’t speak for two and a half years, Juan called Jose out of the blue and asked, “Wanna start a band?” Jose responded with an indifferent, “Yea…” They were originally a Sugar Ray cover band, but then decided to write and perform their own songs. They acquired the drumming skills of Anna, who was personally taught percussion by Louis Armstrong’s niece’s roommate’s drug dealer. Juan, Jose, and Anna meshed so well together that Jose’s mother said, “These guys should play Jose’s grandmother’s 85th birthday.” They played to an astounding reception and gave Jose’s grandmother a birthday to remember. After their first show was an instant success, they decided to play more shows for people like you reading this right now. Bask in the music of The Beets. Your parents will like them, too. Listen to their songs and feel free to see them when they play a show at your house.
