[ INFO. ]

[ AVA LUNA ]

Ava Luna sat cross-legged on top of an enormous statue of an Elephant. She had spent all morning climbing up, and now was enjoying the view as she sat squarely atop the beast’s head, with each of her small hands holding up her weight against either ear.

A young boy from down the block stopped his pattering gait to stand at the Elephant’s feet and gaze up at Ava, his hand shielding his eyes from the sun. “What are you doing up there?” he called.

“I’m riding,” she said, so quietly that the boy could scarcely hear.

“Don’t you know that Elephant will never move?”

“Yes,” Ava replied, as she clumsily uncrossed her legs and allowed them to dangle on either side of the great trunk like two delicate treebranches.

[ THE BEETS ]

The band known as The Beets got their start a long time ago when your mother was still a hippie. Juan and Jose would go skinny dipping by themselves every Saturday at Huntsman Woods. Eventually, they introduced themselves to each other. While chatting up a storm as they dried themselves after an afternoon of swimming, Juan and Jose exchanged a mutual liking of music and revealed that they both played instruments. They immediately exchanged AOL screen names. Later that week, Jose’s cocaine dealer who he saw every morning at the breakfast table—and whom he called dad—introduced Jose to a new buyer/addict. Her name was Anna. She apparently played drums “or some shit like that,” Jose’s father—or shall I say dealer—put it. Jose called her up one night with Juan and played a couple of basement shows and Jose’s grandmother’s 85th birthday party with her. It turns out that she owed money to some mega-asshole named Pacoco. Next thing you know, there was some 2:00 a.m. frantic phone call made, a bloody ransom note, a lock of hair, half a pinky finger, yadda-yadda, Anna’s still missing. To fill the void left by Anna’s absence, Juan and Jose ended up using this guy by the name of Ben on drums. He was the original singer of the Sugar Ray tribute band Ray’s Sugar. Juan and Jose were big fans. “Hey, you have a pretty rocking voice, why not play drums for us?” Juan asked. It was that simple. Ben said yes, and quit his band. Don’t be surprised if you catch a Beets show and a Sugar Ray song accidentally slips into their set. So there it is. Three lovely lads: Juan on lead vocals and lead guitar, Jose on lead bass, and Ben on lead drums. What the fuck else do you want? Catchy melodies, three hunks, and the tightest jeans your mother would approve of. Bask in the music of The Beets. Your parents will like them, too. Listen to their songs and feel free to see them the next time they play a show at your house.

[ MOOOLS ] <--- Japan!

Formed in 1997, moools have become known as one of the finest independent rock bands in Tokyo, Japan. Their unique combination of dynamic rhythm figures and diverse songwriting styles has found them a strong fan base. They have also attracted the attention of many of the musicians who have shared the bill with them. John Atkins (764 Hero / The Magic Magicians) has described them as sometimes sounding like “a blend of early Talking Heads and Meat Puppets.” Mt. Eerie/The Microphones has even covered their song “Koneko Calender,” which is featured on his live album. moools have a strong relationship with K Records and the Northwest independent music scene. They have played at Olympia’s Yo Yo a Go Go festival twice (1999 & 2001) and even toured the West Coast with Mt. Eerie in the fall of 2003. In addition, moools have had the opportunity to play shows with Modest Mouse, Deerhoof, Calvin Johnson, The Microphones, The Folk Implosion, Love as Laughter, Mirah, The Magic Magicians, +/-, The Eternals and The Crabs when these bands toured Japan. They also toured Japan with Kyle Field’s Little Wings and Mt. Eerie. Besides performing their own set, they also played as the backing band for Little Wings and Mt. Eerie. They were additionally featured as the backing band on The Microphones’ Live in Japan 2003 (KLP158) album. Uchino’s sharp and dynamic drumming contributes one of the album’s highlights during the 10-minute epic “Universe Conclusion.”

[ THE BOY BATHING ]

The Boy Bathing, named after one of Aesop’s Fables, stands for a youthful non-conformity opposed to a world where corruption, false-hope and boredom seem inevitable. Their music is like a flame that can warm, or, burn you when you sit near its glow even leaving you cold when you walk away. These dualities go further into the personality of songwriter David Hurwitz who has been called both smart and stupid in the same sentence and whose lyrics can make you laugh and cry in the same verse.

We dream of un-confiscated forties, shit-cheap liquor off a plywood bar, smoking inside, bands in the backyard, in the basement, in the bathtub. Out of necessity, we do shows at venues that are pretty lenient by New York standards, but in a perfect world every show would happen at home (in this city of eternal roommates). To get to the nitty-gritty, if you have a space, and think music forcefully shoved inside might work for us both, drop us an email. We can use all shapes and sizes, from pretty little alleyways or back porches for an acoustic kind of good time, or an industrial-looking basement for around 100 kids to spazz the fuck out in…
