FRI/SAT - FckCMJ ShowCases

Oh man. For anyone who was at The Silent Barn last night, I salute you. We did good work last night. From almost destroying the basement during Deathset, to a perpetually crowd-surfing set by Team Robespierre, to the surprise performance by Adrian Orange, to the mass hypnosis of Dan Deacon’s dancing sea of drenched kids, I must say I think we’re winning.
If you haven’t noticed, today marks the first day of this festival or something. I don’t know which of you had the $500 to get a badge, or were treated poorly by the completely rigged application process, or what, but lucky for you, The Rats Of NiMH have teamed up with FckCMJ for a completely out-of-control weekend of two back to all ages shows.
One in the best basement in Bushwick after night falls. One all day outdoors, with 11 bands, back-to-back, for FREE. Pick one, pick both. Just don’t settle for anything less than fun with your friends :)

[ INFO. ]
[ OPPENHEIMER ] <--- Ireland!
"Oppenheimer's debut kicks with motoric insistence while keeping to a regimen of hook and switch melody" < Magnet Magazine / "Pop Disco for Electro Punks" < Drowned In Sound / "Fantastic Fuzzy Noise" < Rocksound / "Like a fizzing flying saucer scanning planet haribo" < NME

[ LE RUG ]
A pop music exorcism. Ray Weiss (also from Hundred Dollar Elephant and The Medics) channels post-punk fire from somewhere mysterious inside of himself. He must be hollow, because it couldn’t possible fit anywhere else. Double-drum dance solos, electric keyboard freakouts, tearing apart his guitar until he looks like he’s going to vomit… Le Rug starts off every set by doing a nose dive off the roof’s edge, and just keeps gaining speed until the whole room goes splat.

[ OLLIE BYRD + THE TREES ]
“Musically, Byrd excels at creating a full band sound by himself, embracing his influences while noticeably striving for something to call his own. The songs are broad, well structured, extremely animated, and sometimes adventurous. They progress, revert, and often explode delightfully at the end. This, combined with Byrd’s new-millennium yet down-home production style, result in songs that are raw, stirring, and unpredictable. The potential here is astounding.” - Jason Miller, Spacelab

[ NO ONE + THE SOMEBODIES ]
“Mad scientists when it comes to their art, experimenting with quirky new sounds to add to their catchy pop songs.” <--- http://www.freeindie.com/

[ HUMAN HOST ] <--- Baltimore
Human Host began in December 2002 in Baltimore, Md., USA. Their work is a combination of punk, crunk, psychedelia, folklore, and theatre. Led by Mike Apichella, the creative core of Human Host also includes Rick Weaver, Jeff Duncan, and Josh Marchant in addition to a rotating ensemble of diverse musical & non-musical contributors and collaborators.

[ WE ARE THE SEAHORSES ]
WHAT WILL YOU DO??? We Are The Seahorses, America’s great gay hope, has the answer to that question. In honor of those fallen on 9/11, we want you to listen to our new songs 911 times. 911 plays for 9/11!!! Show the terrorists you aren’t scared by listening over and over and over to the sweet sounds of the heartland courtesy of WE ARE THE SEAHORSES. May god bless America, and may God bless We Are The Seahorses

[ BRIGHTSIDE ]
THE BREAK IN THE TIME SPACE CONTINUUM WAS RIgHT ON. IT IS BRIGHT HERE. GOOD TO REPORT HOW MUCH IS POSSIBLE. I foUND A PAIR OF LOvERS EYES LAST NIGHT AND NOTHING LOOKS THE SAME.

[ FIGHT LIKE APES ]
What happens when four highly motivated couch potatoes, trawl through the b-movie underworld in search of the purest of gold…? They Fight Like Apes! Hailing from Dublin, Ireland and weighing in at over 6 hundred pounds, Fight Like Apes combine the Synth with the Sword in this heroic tale of anger, jealousy, greed and …goblins. With an emphasis on loutish vocals, brutish bass and digital distortion Fight Like Apes are highly trained, armed and considered extremely dangerous.

[ THE SO SO GLOS ]
“Mixing up a sometimes overlooked genre of rock and roll and brash swagger, The So So Glos have recorded one of the best collection of songs (four to be exact) to come along in a while. You can feel and smell the city on their EP, dripping with attitude, fun and angst. The tracks are thick with rhythm and gut deep sentimentality, criss-crossing bombast with gentility. Beginning with a singular siren guitar riff on ‘Black & Blue’ singer Alex Levine belts out The cops put a black boy in back of the car / The pretty people watch it as they strut into the bar. He sings as if being dragged away by thugs, his delivery soulful, like a staggered rally cry. The guitar is playful and pointed, moving along and then going quiet, making a point, supplanted even further by the drumming and a howling chorus of have you got it all figured out? It is fucking blissful, hoarse and brazenly Joe Strummer to boot.” - Bootleg Magazine

[ FIFTY ON THEIR HEELS ] <--- Ireland!
FOTH is the sh**. Seriously. Singing, playing guitar, dancing, wearing cool shoes, romping through the crowd so far as his amp chord would let him, slipping on said chord, bleeding on the mic, and then rocking s'more. All for a Thursday! Way to give'er, as the Canadians say.

[ LIDIA STONE ]
“Lidia Stone: Vying with Necking for the Most Kinetic Set ribbon, Lidia Stone defied the ‘acoustic’ show designation by playing buzzy casio punk (a battery operated loophole) with beats banged out on luggage outfitted with kick pedals, while frontman Nites leapt over the heads of several stunned audience members, borrowed a forty from several others, and convinced everyone else to sing whoa-oh back-up to his shouts of “If you like Mastodon / we’ll go further on”. Songs included ‘Eye of the Taigaa’ and ‘On Babylon’, which Nites introduced with something like ‘This is a song about the Apocalypse. Well, actually all of our songs are about the Apocalypse.’” —Impose Magazine <--- http://imposemagazine.com/
—> MySpace <--- http://myspace.com/lidiastone
[ AVA LUNA ]
Ava Luna sat cross-legged on top of an enormous statue of an Elephant. She had spent all morning climbing up, and now was enjoying the view as she sat squarely atop the beast’s head, with each of her small hands holding up her weight against either ear. A young boy from down the block stopped his pattering gait to stand at the Elephant’s feet and gaze up at Ava, his hand shielding his eyes from the sun. “What are you doing up there?” he called.“I’m riding,” she said, so quietly that the boy could scarcely hear. “Don’t you know that Elephant will never move?” “Yes,” Ava replied, as she clumsily uncrossed her legs and allowed them to dangle on either side of the great trunk like two delicate treebranches.

[ ANIMANDIBLE ]
ANIMANDIBLE are about 1.5 years old risen from the remains of famed Brooklyn cowbellcore combo UKUK. Gypsy makes beats and shouts and writhes, Ronno decorates with choice cuts of melodic riffage and juicey keybass and also yells in the background. It’s exciting. but can you dance to it? Yes, you can.
—–> MySpace <--- http://myspace.com/animandible
[ FIASCO ]
“Brooklyn’s Fiasco rock the rapid-fire punk strums played at eighty-eighty miles per second - to create orchestrated chaos - There are ‘kid bands’ and then there are bands who happen to be kids. Fiasco are the latter. This is no Menudo - Make no mistake, this is punk rock. But there’s definitely a Strokes-y element to their vocals that make their noise pretty melodic, too - If Thurston Moore likes Be Your Own Pet (which he does, since he signed them) then he will LOVE these guys.” - Oh My Rockness (featured “Band We Like,” September, 2007)

[ ABSTRACT ARTIMUS ]
Now Brooklyn-based. Fuck yeah!
—> MySpace <--- http://myspace.com/abstractartimus
[ SAY HELLO TO SYMPHONY ]
Say Hello to Symphony is Smart Rock. Smart Rock is meticulous and off the cuff. Smart Rock likes to get wasted and talk about philosophy and the universe. Smart Rock is pompous and humble. Smart Rock is Mozart and Morrissey, Deerhoof and Dylan, Rachmaninoff and Radiohead, Stevie Wonder and Weezer. Smart Rock likes to make fun of itself and everyone else, because Smart Rock knows the world is too beautiful and fucked up for you to be happy all the time, or always crying. Smart Rock doesn’t believe in being one-dimensional, and sometimes, Smart Rock is stupid. Smart Rock wants it all. Smart Rock has layers, don’t you?
