Double Dagger / The So So Glos / Titus Andronicus / R-Tronika @ Dead Herring

Promoter personality aside, there are so many awesome elements in the show tomorrow night that I don’t know how I’m supposed to fill you all in without writing an essay.

First of all, my very good friends The So So Glos are about to leave New York City on a very, very ambitious 2 month tour. I’m really excited for them, and the amount of effort they’ve spent outfitted their tour bus (an airport model shuttle bus!), and booking shows throughout houses across America makes me intensely happy to think of all the DIY scenes they will soon helping me (and those who are interested) experience peripherally. They’ve also finished their first CD just in time for this show, which is both their record release party, and the last show they’ll be playing in New York for until they come back right before Christmas.

Celebrating with them will be R-Tronika (who blew us all away with his completely unique Peruvian/Queens dance flavor at the Mislead Youth Benefit), Titus Andronicus (which are my favorite new maniacs from Dirty Jerz), and DOUBLE DAGGER, who hopped on the bill just to add a little rocket fuel to an already out-of-control contraption.

Not only does that make for an over-the-top bill, but We Lovebirds (and one of my best friends in New York, Matt Elkin) helped curate the whole thing with Rats Of NiMH and snag one of the sweetest show lofts in Williamsburg, Dead Herring. The legacy of crazy rock shows in this houses’ kitchen/living room/balcony is literally soaked in the floorboards.

I’m so excited about this show I feel nauseous.

[ INFO. ]

[ DOUBLE DAGGER ]
“Po-mo as a motherfucker. At what point does hyper self-consciousness and self-awarness become severe enough to cause the universe to fold in on itself? Hipsterism, internet message boards and design (even their name is a typographic reference) are just some of the subjects tackled by this deconstructed rock combo in an aware of self and audience and place of self within audience (am i over doing it enough yet?) fashion. Songs with titles like “My Dad Has a Theory That The Internet Is The Roman Coliseum Of Our Times” or “Punk Rock vs. Swiss Modernism” probably wouldn’t work as well without the minimalist artcore approach Double Dagger employs. So perhaps it is you who writes reviews, yes?” - Punk Planet

[ THE SO SO GLOS ]
“Mixing up a sometimes overlooked genre of rock and roll and brash swagger, The So So Glos have recorded one of the best collection of songs (four to be exact) to come along in a while. You can feel and smell the city on their EP, dripping with attitude, fun and angst. The tracks are thick with rhythm and gut deep sentimentality, criss-crossing bombast with gentility. Beginning with a singular siren guitar riff on ‘Black & Blue’ singer Alex Levine belts out The cops put a black boy in back of the car / The pretty people watch it as they strut into the bar. He sings as if being dragged away by thugs, his delivery soulful, like a staggered rally cry. The guitar is playful and pointed, moving along and then going quiet, making a point, supplanted even further by the drumming and a howling chorus of have you got it all figured out? It is fucking blissful, hoarse and brazenly Joe Strummer to boot.” - Bootleg Magazine

[ TITUS ANDRONICUS ]
“I first saw Titus Andronicus on the third floor of a Durham music venue normally reserved for goth and electro throwdowns. It was June and it was hot, the sort of North Carolina night where you hope sweat is sexy because, really, that’s all you’ve got. Titus hit the stage at 9:00 p.m., already pretty drunk and snappy. Like the Hold Steady sans two decades, the five members took half-can hits of beer every time they could get a hand off of an instrument. Frontman Patrick Stickles was falling all over his keyboard two furious takes in, belligerently puffing on a cigar as he played one-hand piano. Still, they hit every mark, nailing noise and debris against shake-and-sing anthems. That’s Titus Andronicus’ ploy– aggressing and endearing audiences as a completely ramshackle crew of Jersey drunks, while somehow triumphing through perfectly clangorous pop songs.” - PitchforkMedia

We dream of un-confiscated forties, shit-cheap liquor off a plywood bar, smoking inside, bands in the backyard, in the basement, in the bathtub. Out of necessity, we do shows at venues that are pretty lenient by New York standards, but in a perfect world every show would happen at home (in this city of eternal roommates). To get to the nitty-gritty, if you have a space, and think music forcefully shoved inside might work for us both, drop us an email. We can use all shapes and sizes, from pretty little alleyways or back porches for an acoustic kind of good time, or an industrial-looking basement for around 100 kids to spazz the fuck out in…
